Maps for Getting Lost

Photographs by John Ryan Brubaker

Maps for Getting Lost is a series of photographic books made on exploratory walks through urban environments. They are an investigation of the process of travel without destination, what the Situationists would call a dérive.

Each book or chapter chronicles a single journey, often based on absurd or errant methods of navigation. These include using a map of Brussels to cross the city of Rome, following heights of buildings or pattens in sidewalks and moving only against the flow of street traffic.

Printed artist book and digital versions available. The iPad version will expand over time, new chapters will be added automatically as the project evolves in the future.

An image from my Random Strangers project is part of a group exhibition opening this weekend at Newspace in Portland, OR. I’m surely sorry to be on the wrong continent for this opening…

Opening Reception: Friday, February 1st 6-9pm

“NEWSPACE Center for Photography is pleased to present Photography at the Edge, our 2013 Themed Exhibition juried by NEWSPACE Executive Director Tricia Hoffman.

As artists adapt to an ever-expanding range of options for creating photography, our understanding and acceptance of what might be considered a photograph continues to shift. The NEWSPACE 2013 Themed Exhibition:Photography at the Edge showcases work that contains photographic processes but still hovers at the edges of the medium. These include alternative printing methods (digital and historic), appropriated imagery, book presentations, iPhone images, photo-collage, and three-dimensional objects. Although every piece incorporates photography as a primary method, each pushes the boundaries of what might be considered “photography” in varying ways.”
